Wyrms are level-97 draconic monsters that require 62 Slayer. The simplest setup is Ranged or an earth spell from outside melee distance with Protect from Magic. In 2026, you are no longer limited to Mount Karuulm: regular Wyrms also live in the cannon-friendly Wyrmscraig Cavern after partial completion of Fallen From Grace.

Wyrms do not breathe dragonfire. An antifire potion or anti-dragon shield adds no protection here. They are vulnerable to the dragon hunter lance, crossbow and wand because they have the draconic attribute.

Karuulm heat protection
Inside Mount Karuulm, wear boots of stone, boots of brimstone or granite boots unless you have completed the Elite Kourend & Kebos Diary. The floor damage is environmental; food and prayer do not replace the correct boots. Wyrmscraig does not impose this footwear rule.
Best gear for Wyrms
Use your imbued Slayer helmet on task, then prioritize accuracy and damage. The most practical setup depends on your location and budget.
Budget Ranged
Slayer helm (i), black d'hide, Ava's device, rune crossbow with broad or better bolts, Barrows gloves and a damage ring. Use heat-safe boots at Karuulm.
Faster Ranged
Dragon hunter crossbow, blowpipe or bow of Faerdhinen with appropriate armour. Check a DPS calculator because blowpipe results depend heavily on darts, gear and levels.
Magic
Cast your best sensible earth spell and stay outside melee range. The 50% earth weakness can make standard elemental magic efficient without requiring max gear.
Melee
Dragon hunter lance, rapier, fang, hasta or another accurate stab option. Melee is viable, but Wyrms can use both attack styles at close range.
The most useful Slayer items can save inventory space, but upgrade order should follow your broader account goals rather than this one task.
How to kill Wyrms efficiently
- Choose the objective first. Use regular Wyrms for their unique dragon drops, Wyrmlings for speed, or lava strykewyrms for Sailing-era loot.
- Stand outside melee range. A regular Wyrm then uses only Magic, so Protect from Magic can negate its attacks.
- Use the cannon only where allowed. Wyrmscraig supports it; the Karuulm Wyrm chamber does not.
- Keep alch runes and inventory space. Wyrm bones, alchables and stackable dragon ammunition fill trips quickly.
- Handle superiors deliberately. Bigger and Badder costs 50 Slayer points and gives eligible kills a base 1/200 chance to spawn a Shadow Wyrm while on task.
Ranged safespots work in both established locations, but they are optional if Protect from Magic and your Prayer supplies already cover the trip. If using Melee, bring food because one protection prayer cannot stop both its close-range attack styles.
Wyrm drops and task value
Regular Wyrms always drop Wyrm bones and are the standard source for the dragon sword and dragon harpoon. Their four special dragon drops are each much more likely on assignment.

Those are individual drop rates, not a promise that one appears every 2,000 kills. Ironmen hunting a dragon harpoon have an additional route through Tempoross. For mains, compare current Grand Exchange prices before treating any assignment as a fixed GP-per-hour method.

Can you use a cannon on Wyrms?
Yes in Wyrmscraig Cavern, but not in the Karuulm Wyrm area. This is one of the most important changes missing from older guides.
Which prayer should you use?
Use Protect from Magic when attacking a regular Wyrm from outside melee range. Lava strykewyrms use Ranged at distance, so they require different protection.
Should you skip Wyrm tasks?
Efficiency-focused mains may skip them because Slayer XP is only moderate. Ironmen often keep them for the harpoon chance, bones and supplies. Wyrmscraig also makes the regular task faster than it used to be.
Are Bandos pieces required for Melee?
No. Strength gear helps, but an accurate weapon, Slayer helmet and supplies matter more. Our Bandos armour guide explains when that upgrade is worth the cost.
Are Wyrms better than Bloodvelds?
They serve different goals. Wyrms offer distinct dragon uniques and bones; Bloodvelds are generally chosen for straightforward Slayer XP. Compare the current Bloodveld locations and strategy before deciding which tasks to block.
