Wolverine is the clearest direct counter to Magneto in Marvel Rivals Season 9.5. His close-range, maximum-Health-based damage ignores the main purpose of Metallic Curtain, while Feral Leap can separate Magneto from the teammates he wants to shield. Emma Frost and The Thing are the best Vanguard answers; Angela, Devil Dinosaur and Iron Fist are useful alternatives when their playstyles fit your team.
This guide reflects Marvel Rivals Season 9.5 and the August 20 live patch. Counter rankings use current hero kits plus community-tracked duel and team-fight evidence; they are not automatic-win percentages.
| Hero | Role | Why the matchup works | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wolverine | Duelist | Maximum-Health damage, melee pressure and Feral Leap isolation | A missed leap leaves him exposed |
| Emma Frost | Vanguard | Diamond Form brawling, displacement and grab pressure | Limited reach after committing her form switch |
| The Thing | Vanguard | Melee pressure, Vulnerability and displacement resistance | Can be kited without a clean leap or corner |
| Angela | Vanguard | Mobile angles make one forward curtain insufficient | Needs disciplined timing, not a frontal damage race |
| Devil Dinosaur | Vanguard | Sustained close pressure and current maximum-Health damage | Large model is easy for Magneto's team to focus |
| Iron Fist | Duelist | Fast melee access around a projectile-only curtain | Mag-Cannon can punish a predictable entry |
The first three picks also lead current community-tracked Magneto counter data. That evidence measures duel and team-fight outcomes rather than a guaranteed match win, so use it as a matchup signal—not a reason to abandon a hero you cannot play.
Older versions of this article described pulls and abilities called Magnetic Grasp or Unleashed Magnetism. Those abilities are not in Magneto's current kit. His real defensive loop is much more specific:
Season 9.5 also strengthened the Scarlet Witch version of Metallic Chaos by adding a minor Launch Up on the enhanced projectile. Check the enemy team-up selection before treating Magneto's offense as unchanged.

Wolverine's Savage Claw includes damage based on the target's maximum Health, which makes it unusually efficient into Vanguards. Use natural cover to approach, then aim Feral Leap across Magneto's escape path so the snatch carries him away from his Strategists rather than deeper into safety.
Do not leap into an intact six-player formation. Wait for Iron Bulwark, force it with ordinary pressure, then commit while Undying Animal is available. Season 9.5 increased Rage gained from taking hits and delayed its decay, but positioning still matters more than simply holding primary fire. The Wolverine play guide covers his full brawl loop.

Emma can contest Magneto without building her plan around ranged projectiles. Diamond Form makes her Unstoppable and gives her close-range Faceted Fury, Crystal Kick and Carbon Crush. Use Mind's Aegis to cut supporting fire, then switch form when Magneto commits. A wall-side Crystal Kick or Carbon Crush can pull him away from the lane he is protecting.
Emma is not a dive assassin. If Diamond Form expires in the enemy backline, her lack of an instant escape becomes the limitation. Stay within follow-up range of your team and read the Emma Frost ability guide before treating the pick as a free duel.
Battle Blitz lets The Thing jump to an enemy and apply Vulnerability around the landing area. His melee attacks do not care about the forward projectile curtain, and Unyielding Will prevents launch, knockback and other displacement from moving him. That makes a fully charged Mag-Cannon less useful as a peel tool against Ben than against most heroes.
Land beside Magneto rather than charging from maximum distance through the whole enemy team. Keep Embattled Leap available when your backline needs damage reduction. The full Thing hero guide explains when to alternate the ally and enemy leap charges.
Angela is valuable when vertical space lets her change approach lines. Make Magneto choose between facing you and protecting the main lane. Commit after the curtain turns or its energy is low, then keep enough mobility to leave if the enemy team collapses. Her value drops in low-ceiling rooms where the approach becomes obvious.
Devil Dinosaur's first four Frenzied Feast attacks now deal 8% maximum-Health damage and the fifth deals 12% in Season 9.5. That makes a completed close-range sequence threatening to Magneto even through a large health pool. The trade-off is an enormous target model: take short paths through cover and do not cross an open sightline alone.
Iron Fist can use mobility and melee pressure to bypass the curtain and force Magneto to turn. He works best when another teammate already holds Magneto's attention. This is a mechanically demanding answer: entering straight through the main lane lets Magneto pre-charge Mag-Cannon and punish the approach.
Range alone does not counter Magneto. Iron Man, Hela, Black Widow and Punisher all give him projectile pressure that Metallic Curtain or Meteor M can deny. They can still win with superior angles, cooldown timing and team support, but none is a reliable one-button answer. Black Panther and Spider-Man are better used to threaten isolated Strategists than to spend a full combo on a shielded Magneto.
Likewise, Luna Snow's Absolute Zero and Mantis' Spore Slumber can punish a barrier window, but current matchup evidence does not make Luna a strong direct Magneto counter. Pick a Strategist for your whole composition, then use crowd control to enable the frontline rather than taking a solo duel.
Wolverine is the best direct counter in Season 9.5 because his maximum-Health damage, melee pressure and Feral Leap all challenge Magneto's defensive loop. Emma Frost and The Thing are the strongest Vanguard alternatives.
No. The official ability description says it blocks incoming projectiles. Melee heroes can enter Magneto's space, although his team can still punish an unsupported push.
Usually stop firing absorbable projectiles into Meteor M. Projectile absorption increases its power, and overloading it is an unreliable team plan unless your group is deliberately coordinating that response.
Yes. The enhanced Season 9.5 Metallic Chaos projectile adds a minor Launch Up. Check team-ups at the start of the round and allow extra room when Magneto can use the charged Chaos Greatsword variant.
Ability behavior was checked against the official Magneto hero record, official hero records for Wolverine, Emma Frost and The Thing, the official Season 9.5 balance post and the August 20 patch notes. Counter ordering also considered Counterwatch's community-tracked all-ranks duel and team-fight data updated August 25, 2026.
