Why Fortnite does not run directly on SteamOS

Steam Deck uses Valve's Linux-based SteamOS. Fortnite does not have a native Linux build, and Epic has not enabled a supported SteamOS route for the game's anti-cheat stack. Compatibility layers such as Proton and Wine cannot turn that unsupported combination into a dependable installation.

That is why this guide does not revive old Heroic, Lutris, Pacman, or custom-script instructions. Those tools may install a launcher, but reaching a working, supported Fortnite match is the part that matters. Cloud play avoids the compatibility problem: Fortnite and its anti-cheat run on a provider's supported remote machine. The Deck only sends input and displays a compressed video stream.

Option 1: Xbox Cloud Gaming

Xbox Cloud Gaming is the lowest-cost supported route because Fortnite does not require an Xbox Game Pass subscription. You need a free Microsoft account, a supported region, a stable connection, and the Steam Deck browser setup.
