How to Change Your Fortnite Display Name on Every Platform

Which name does Fortnite show on each platform?

Start here. Changing the wrong account field is the main reason a new name fails to appear.

Epic display name versus Epic Account ID

Your Epic display name is the public name that can be edited. Your Epic Account ID is a unique internal identifier. Epic says the Account ID cannot be changed, and it should not be treated as a public username. Changing a display name does not create a new Epic account.

How to change your Fortnite name on PC or mobile

Use a browser on a computer, phone, or tablet:

1. Open the official Epic Account settings page and sign in to the account used by Fortnite.
2. If asked, verify the email address on the account. Epic requires a verified email before a display-name change.
3. Find Display Name in the account information area.
4. Select the edit control, type the new name, and confirm it.
5. Select Continue to save.
6. Restart Fortnite or the Epic Games Launcher if the previous name is still cached.

The change is free, but you can make it only once every two weeks. If a lock icon appears beside the field, point to or select its information control to check the last change date. There is no paid way to skip the Epic cooldown.

How to change your Fortnite name on Nintendo Switch

Fortnite on Switch displays the Epic Games display name. Changing the nickname in Nintendo's user settings does not rename the Fortnite profile.

1. In a browser, open the Epic sign-in page.
2. Choose the Nintendo sign-in icon and use the Nintendo account linked to the Fortnite profile.
3. If Epic asks you to Finish Setting Up Your Account, complete that official account setup and verify the email. This can happen when the profile began as a console-only Epic account.
4. Open Account settings and edit the Epic Display Name.
5. Save the new name, close Fortnite on Switch, and relaunch it.

How to change your Fortnite name on PlayStation

Fortnite uses the PlayStation Network Online ID on PS5 and PS4. Editing only the Epic display name will not replace the name shown on PlayStation.

On PlayStation 5

1. Open Settings.
2. Choose Users and Accounts > Account > Profile > Online ID.
3. Enter an available Online ID and follow the on-screen confirmation.

On PlayStation 4

1. Open Settings.
2. Choose Account Management > Account Information > Profile > Online ID.
3. Enter the new ID and complete Sony's prompts.

In a browser

Sign in to PlayStation Account Management, open Profile, and select Edit beside Online ID.

Sony makes the first Online ID change free and charges for later changes; the checkout shows the applicable local price before you confirm. Child accounts cannot change an Online ID. Sony also signs the account out on all devices after a change, and lets you show the old ID beside the new one for 30 days so friends can recognize it.

How to change your Fortnite name on Xbox

Fortnite uses your Xbox gamertag on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. An Epic display-name edit will not replace it there.

On an Xbox console

1. Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system.
2. Select your profile, then My profile.
3. Choose Customize profile and select the current gamertag.
4. Enter the new gamertag and choose Check availability.
5. Review how Microsoft will display it, then confirm Change gamertag.

On the Xbox website

Sign in at xbox.com, open your profile, and use the profile edit or account setting for Change gamertag. Check that you are signed in to the Microsoft account connected to the Fortnite profile.

Microsoft says the first gamertag change is free, even if you chose the original tag yourself; later changes carry a fee that varies by region and currency. On current Xbox systems, a gamertag can be up to 12 characters including spaces and cannot start with a number. The updated tag follows the Xbox profile and appears to friends across Xbox services.

Epic display-name rules, email verification, and parental limits

• Length: 3–16 characters under Epic's current display-name rules.
• Availability: another Epic account cannot already be using the same display name.
• Content: Epic prohibits vulgar, hateful, offensive, or discriminatory names; personal information; and direct references to Epic employees, products, services, or characters.
• Email: the Epic account email must be verified before editing the display name.
• Cooldown: one Epic display-name change every two weeks.

A Cabined Account receives an auto-generated display name and cannot choose a custom one until a parent or guardian completes the required setup and consent. If the account is under parental controls but is not cabined, the available account changes depend on the permissions and age information on the profile. Use Epic's official family-account process; do not falsify a date of birth.

Will changing the name affect skins, V-Bucks, or progress?

A name change keeps the same underlying Epic, PlayStation, or Xbox account, so it does not remove Fortnite progress, purchases, cosmetics, or linked-platform data. Sony and Microsoft also treat their ID changes as profile renames rather than new accounts.

The risk comes from changing account connections, not the display name. Epic warns that unlinking a console account can make its Fortnite progress and purchases inaccessible on that console, and launching again can create a new empty Epic account. Epic also limits removal of a same-platform linking restriction. If the wrong console profile is linked, document the account IDs and contact Epic Support before changing any connection.

Why the new Fortnite name is not showing

You changed the Epic name, but play on PlayStation or Xbox

That is expected. PlayStation displays the PSN Online ID and Xbox displays the gamertag. Change the corresponding console identity by following the platform steps above.

The Epic display-name field has a lock

The account is still inside its two-week cooldown. Check the field's information icon for the most recent change date and wait until the restriction ends.

Epic asks for email verification

Complete verification through the message sent to the account email. If you no longer control that inbox, use Epic's official account-recovery process instead of creating another account or changing platform links.

The name was rejected

Try a different 3–16 character name and remove personal information, offensive wording, or a direct reference to an Epic employee, product, service, or character. An otherwise valid name may already belong to another account.

The correct field changed, but the old name is cached

1. Confirm the new name on the official Epic, PlayStation, or Xbox account page.
2. Close Fortnite fully, then relaunch it.
3. Restart the launcher or console if needed.
4. Allow friends lists and external tracker sites time to refresh their cached data.

Epic display names can be changed once every two weeks. PlayStation Online IDs and Xbox gamertags use their own fee and eligibility rules rather than Epic's timer.

Is changing a Fortnite name free?

Can I change an Epic Account ID?

Why is my Fortnite name different on console and PC?
