You can get a Tormented Synapse in OSRS by killing level-450 Tormented Demons after completing While Guthix Sleeps. The confirmed drop rate is 1/500 per kill. Unlike the original article's claim, the synapse is tradeable, so non-Iron accounts may also buy one from another player or the Grand Exchange.
Before you can craft with it
Finish While Guthix Sleeps, speak to Kuradal about her father Duradel, and read Duradel's notes. The notes unlock the Emberlight, Scorching Bow and Purging Staff recipes.
Last verified: August 26, 2026 · Drop rate and mechanics checked against Jagex update notes and the current OSRS Wiki. The live Grand Exchange guide price was about 42.1 million coins; check again before trading.
Tormented Synapse requirements and drop rate
| Detail | Current information | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Drop source | Tormented Demon, combat level 450 | Only PvM source |
| Drop rate | 1/500 | A probability per kill, not a 500-kill guarantee |
| Access | Complete While Guthix Sleeps | Opens the Ancient Guthixian Temple after the quest |
| Slayer requirement | None | They count as greater demons when assigned |
| Tradeable | Yes; Grand Exchange buy limit 5 | Mains can buy; Iron players must receive the drop |
| Recipe unlock | Read Duradel's notes from Kuradal | Required before using the synapse |
The drop table first rolls the synapse at 1/500, then the burning claw if the synapse roll fails, followed by the smouldering-item and standard tables. Seeing another unique does not mean the next kill is “due.”
How to reach Tormented Demons
- Complete While Guthix Sleeps. The post-quest Ancient Guthixian Temple contains 26 demons across single, double and triple engagement areas.
- Use a Guthixian temple teleport. This is the fastest repeat route and the demons drop two scrolls at a 1/12 rate.
- Use Tears of Guthix as the fallback. A games necklace or POH jewellery box reaches the area; bring a lit sapphire lantern to attract a light creature and descend through the chasm.
- Start in a single-demon room. The pseudo-multicombat sections reward advanced timing but punish learners who cannot manage staggered styles.

How to kill Tormented Demons efficiently
Bring at least two attack styles because a demon uses protection prayers and changes its prayer after 150 damage from the last swap. The demon also attacks with melee, ranged or magic and changes style after its fire-bomb special.
- React to the prayer, not a fixed rotation. Switch to the other attack style as soon as the overhead changes.
- Move after the bind. Roughly every 60 ticks, the demon disables normal running briefly and marks fire-bomb tiles. You have two ticks after release to leave the targets; Ctrl-click can still force a run action.
- Exploit the dropped shield. After the first attack and each fire-bomb sequence, its fire shield drops for one incoming hit. Slow five-, six- or seven-tick weapons receive a special damage bonus on that hit.
- Watch the back flames. When they extinguish, the demon enters its defenseless window and your attacks have 100% accuracy until the fire-bomb cycle resets it.
- Use demonbane where available. Arclight, Emberlight, demonbane spells and the synapse weapons receive their intended advantages. Ordinary non-demonbane damage is reduced by the active fire shield.
- Do not bring a cannon. Tormented Demons are cannon-immune.
A realistic starter setup pairs Arclight with a ranged switch such as an Eclipse atlatl, toxic blowpipe or bow of faerdhinen according to budget. Carry prayer restoration, high-healing food, a slow punish weapon for the shield-down hit and a one-click teleport. High combat stats improve efficiency, but there is no Slayer-level gate.
If you are building broader Slayer fundamentals first, the updated OSRS Wyrm guide shows how to plan location, protection and task-specific gear without assuming max equipment.
Every Tormented Synapse weapon recipe
Read Duradel's notes before attempting any recipe. Emberlight and Purging Staff require an anvil and hammer; the Scorching Bow can be made anywhere.
| Weapon | Materials | Skill requirement | First craft XP | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emberlight | Synapse + Arclight | 74 Smithing | 730 Smithing | Melee demonbane; permanent Arclight upgrade |
| Scorching Bow | Synapse + magic longbow (u) | 74 Fletching | 730 Fletching | Ranged demonbane with a binding special attack |
| Purging Staff | Synapse + iron bar + battlestaff | 74 Smithing and 55 Crafting | 730 Smithing + 13 Crafting | Magic demonbane and autocasting |
Repeat crafting awards only 73 Smithing or Fletching XP for the relevant 74-level recipe; Purging Staff retains 13 Crafting XP. Since February 26, 2025, each weapon can be reverted to recover the synapse only. The Arclight, magic longbow (u), battlestaff and iron bar are not returned.
Which synapse weapon should you make first?
Emberlight
The broad melee choice for demon-heavy Slayer and PvM. Best when you already have a well-charged Arclight and expect frequent melee targets.
Scorching Bow
Useful when ranged positioning or its special attack solves a specific demon encounter. It has the simplest recipe location requirement.
Purging Staff
A specialized magic route for players with the right spellbook and target. Do not choose it solely because the base materials are cheap.
The best first choice depends on the content you will actually run, not the weapon's nominal market price. Reverting makes a later switch possible, but destroys the non-synapse ingredients, so repeated swaps are not free.
Should you farm or buy a Tormented Synapse?
Iron accounts must farm the 1/500 drop. A main should compare the live synapse price with personal kill speed, supply use and the value of other drops. At roughly 42.1 million coins on the review date, it accounted for most of the demon's expected profit—but that price can move sharply.
Farming also produces burning claws, teleport scrolls, ashes and ordinary loot while teaching the encounter. Buying removes drop variance and can be efficient if you already have a better money maker. Our Elder Maul acquisition guide uses the same useful distinction between obtaining a drop yourself and buying a tradeable upgrade.
Players who choose the market route can compare OSRS item listings, but always check the in-game Grand Exchange, trade limits and Jagex's rules before a transaction. No third-party purchase is required.
Tormented Synapse FAQ
Is the Tormented Synapse tradeable?
Yes. It is a tradeable, noteable Grand Exchange item with a buy limit of five. Completed synapse weapons are untradeable until reverted.
Do you need a greater demon Slayer task?
No. Tormented Demons can be killed off task after the quest. They count as greater demons if you do have a relevant assignment.
Is a synapse guaranteed after 500 kills?
No. A 1/500 rate applies independently to each eligible kill. You may receive one on the first kill or go far beyond 500 without one.
Can you swap a synapse between weapons?
Yes, by reverting the completed weapon and recovering the synapse. The other materials are lost, and recrafting gives the reduced subsequent-craft XP.
Do you need Duradel's notes if you bought the synapse?
Yes. Buying bypasses the random drop, not the recipe unlock. Speak to Kuradal about Duradel and read the notes after meeting the quest requirement.
Sources and update policy
Tradeability and the three weapons originate in Jagex's While Guthix Sleeps release; the official follow-up confirmed the 1/500 rate. Requirements, current recipes, the 2025 reversal change, demon mechanics and the dated GE guide price were checked against the OSRS Wiki. Prices and strategy assumptions are rechecked when major combat or loot updates land.
