Use headphones, enable Fortnite’s native 3D audio when it helps your headset, turn Visualize Sound Effects on, and lower music so it cannot mask footsteps.
There is no honest “hear enemies from twice as far” slider. The goal is to preserve directional information, reduce masking sounds, and keep volume safe enough for long sessions.

Best Fortnite audio settings at a glance
| Setting | Starting value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Main volume | 70–100% in game; control final loudness on headset | Keeps signal resolution while allowing safe output volume |
| Music | 0–10% | Prevents lobby and event music from masking cues |
| Sound effects | 100% | Preserves footsteps, shots, gliders, vehicles, and builds |
| Dialogue | 40–70% | Keeps useful callouts without overpowering combat |
| Voice chat | 60–80% | Adjust to teammates; use individual volume controls |
| Cinematics | 0–20% | Reduces noncompetitive loudness |
| 3D Headphones | On with stereo headphones; compare if using external spatial processing | Fortnite’s spatial mix can help locate direction |
| Visualize Sound Effects | On | Adds a radial visual indicator for supported sounds |
How to enable Visualize Sound Effects
- Open Fortnite and select your display-name icon.
- Open Settings.
- Choose the Audio tab.
- Turn Visualize Sound Effects on.
- Select Apply, then test in a normal match.
Epic has acknowledged occasional issues with the feature. If the indicator is glitchy, Epic’s current workaround is to try Performance rendering mode while the issue is investigated.
3D audio and virtual surround
Start with Fortnite’s native 3D Headphones option and a normal stereo headset output. If Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, SteelSeries Sonar, or another virtual surround layer is also active, compare it carefully—double processing can smear direction. Use one spatial system at a time.
A safe EQ starting point
- Reduce deep bass slightly if explosions mask footsteps.
- Avoid extreme treble boosts; they create fatigue and can make shots painfully sharp.
- Keep the midrange natural so building, movement, and voice cues remain recognizable.
- Save the flat/default preset so you can compare instead of guessing.
If footsteps still sound unclear
Check mono audio
Direction disappears in mono
Use stereo unless you rely on mono for accessibility. Mono combines left and right direction.
Remove double surround
Use one spatial processor
Disable extra virtual surround while testing Fortnite 3D Headphones.
Check output device
Windows can switch devices
Confirm Fortnite and Windows use the same headset and sample format.
Test another match
Cues vary by environment
Wind, vehicles, gunfire, vertical layers, and buildings can mask or reflect sound.
Fortnite audio FAQ
Should Visualize Sound Effects be on?
Yes for most competitive players. It adds supported directional cues and is also an important accessibility tool.
Does Visualize Sound Effects mute stereo audio?
Current Fortnite allows visual cues alongside normal audio. Verify after patches because settings behavior can change.
What volume should Fortnite be?
There is no universal safe percentage because headsets and amplifiers differ. Use the lowest comfortable level and reduce masking categories before raising the master output.
What should I optimize next?
Use our Fortnite graphics and NVIDIA settings guide or compare headsets for Fortnite.

Audio perception, hearing, headsets, and room noise differ. Protect your hearing and treat the values as a starting point, not a reason to use excessive volume.
