Avernic Treads sit at the very top when it comes to endgame footwear in Old School RuneScape, and for good reason. These boots combine strong defensive stats with useful offensive bonuses, making them a perfect fit for high-level PvM, raids, and hybrid setups where flexibility matters. What really sets them apart is their upgrade path, allowing players to turn an already powerful item into one of the best-in-slot boots in the game. Getting them isn’t quick or cheap, though, and there are a few important steps you need to know before starting the grind. In this guide, you’ll find a clear breakdown of where Avernic Treads come from, what you need to upgrade them, and the fastest way to unlock them for your account.

Avernic Treads are endgame boots designed for players pushing the highest tiers of content in Old School RuneScape. They drop from Doom of Mokhaiotl and come with steep requirements, needing level 80 Defence, Strength, Ranged, and Magic just to wear them. What makes these boots special is how well-rounded they are. Instead of focusing on a single combat style, Avernic Treads provide strong bonuses across melee, ranged, and magic, letting them outperform Primordial, Pegasian, and Eternal boots overall. While they don’t quite beat Primordials in pure Strength bonus and don’t offer a Prayer bonus like Aranea boots, the combined stats make them a clear upgrade for most situations. On top of combat value, they also work with elite STASH units, replacing Dragon Boots for clue scroll setups, which makes them useful even when you’re not fighting.
The base stats on Avernic Treads are what really push them into endgame territory. On the offensive side, they give balanced attack bonuses across all styles, with small boosts to stab, slash, and crush, alongside noticeably higher magic and ranged accuracy. Defensively, they offer strong protection against melee damage while still providing solid magic and ranged defense, which makes them far more flexible than boots that focus on just one combat style. On top of that, the extra strength bonus, added ranged strength, and a flat magic damage increase make them valuable no matter how you’re fighting. When you look at the full stat package together, Avernic Treads clearly outperform traditional single-style boots and shine as an all-in-one option for high-level PvM and hybrid setups.

To get Avernic Treads, you first need to defeat the Doom of Mokhaiotl, as this boss is the only source of the base boots. Once they drop, you’re only halfway there, since the real value comes from upgrading them into their final form. The upgrade process permanently fuses other high-end boots into the Avernic Treads, turning them into a true all-in-one option for melee, ranged, and magic setups. To fully upgrade them, you’ll need Primordial Boots for the extra strength bonus, Pegasian Boots for ranged strength, and Eternal Boots for increased magic damage. Each of these upgrades also requires 4,000 Demon Tears, meaning you’ll need 12,000 Demon Tears in total to complete all three steps. In addition, you must have 80 Magic and 60 Runecraft, though both of these requirements can be boosted. Once you begin upgrading, the Avernic Treads become untradeable, and every upgrade is permanent. While you can later reclaim the boot components if needed, any Demon Tears used in the process are consumed and cannot be recovered, so it’s important to be sure before committing.
After you get your hands on the base Avernic Treads, you can start turning them into one of the strongest boot upgrades in OSRS by fusing them with Primordial, Pegasian, and Eternal boots. Each upgrade boosts a different combat style: Primordial adds melee strength, Pegasian improves ranged strength, and Eternal increases magic damage. You’re not forced to upgrade everything at once either, which is nice. Each boot can be added separately, in any order, and the bonuses stack as you go. For example, adding only Primordial boots will turn them into Avernic Treads (pr), and later adding Eternal boots will upgrade them again. Once all three boots are combined, you’ll have Avernic Treads (max) with the full stat package unlocked. Every single upgrade step costs 4,000 Demon Tears, meaning a full upgrade requires 12,000 Demon Tears in total. One important thing to keep in mind is that while the fused boots themselves can be recovered later if you choose to undo an upgrade, the Demon Tears used are permanently consumed. Because of that, upgrading Avernic Treads is a commitment, so it’s best done when you’re confident you want the max version long term.
Avernic Treads are a true late-game upgrade in OSRS, offering unmatched flexibility by combining melee, ranged, and magic bonuses into a single pair of boots. While the process of obtaining and upgrading them takes time, resources, and a serious Demon Tears grind, the payoff is well worth it for players pushing high-level PvM or hybrid setups. From defeating the Doom of Mokhaiotl to carefully choosing which upgrades to apply and when, every step rewards preparation and long-term planning. If you’re looking for one of the most future-proof gear upgrades in the game, Avernic Treads easily earn their place as a top-tier investment.
