To change the name other players see in League of Legends, change your Riot ID at account.riotgames.com. Edit the Game Name, the tagline after the #, or both, then select Save Changes. The change is free, but Riot applies a 90-day cooldown after each change.

Which League name are you changing?
A full Riot ID has two public parts. In EarlGreyTeemo#sip, “EarlGreyTeemo” is the Game Name and “sip” is the tagline. League uses that Riot ID as your displayed player identity; the private username you type to sign in is a different field.
| Field | Who sees it | Can you change it? | What it affects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Name | Players in Riot games | Yes, as part of a Riot ID change | The name before # |
| Tagline | Players who view or search your full ID | Yes; changing only the tag still starts the cooldown | The 3–5 characters after # |
| Login username | Only you and Riot Player Support | Normally no | Signing in; it stays private |
Changing the Riot ID does not change your login username or password. It also does not create a new account. If you would rather see champion names above health bars during a match, that is a separate interface setting covered in our guide to showing champion names instead of player names.
How to change your League of Legends name on the web
- Open the official Riot Account page in a browser.
- Sign in to the account whose League name you want to change. If you own several Riot accounts, check the current Riot ID before editing.
- Find the Riot ID section.
- Enter a new Game Name, a new tagline, or both.
- Review the full combination, including capitalization and the tag after #.
- Select Save Changes.
You can make the change while League is open, but an already-running client may continue showing cached account details. After saving, fully close League and the Riot Client, then sign in again if the old name remains visible.
How to start the change in the League client
Riot also documents a League/TFT PC-client route. It opens the same Riot Account flow rather than selling an in-client name token.
- Open League and enter the Shop.
- Select the Account button.
- Choose the Riot ID Change offer.
- Follow the prompt to account.riotgames.com and edit your full Riot ID there.
If that shortcut moves or is temporarily missing after a client update, use the direct account website. Do not buy RP for a name change and do not give a third-party “name checker” your password.
Riot ID rules, cost, and cooldown
- Cost: Free. Riot does not currently offer a paid shortcut around the cooldown.
- Cooldown: 90 days from your last free Riot ID change.
- Game Name length: 3–16 alphanumeric characters under Riot's current support rules.
- Tagline length: 3–5 alphanumeric characters.
- Uniqueness: The Game Name alone does not have to be unique; the complete Game Name#tagline combination must be available.
- Content: Names and taglines cannot be offensive or inappropriate. Riot also bars “Riot” and look-alike spellings, personal information, and attempts to impersonate esports professionals.
A Riot ID change follows the account, not one League server. It changes how the same account appears across Riot games, including League, TFT, VALORANT, Wild Rift, and other titles that display Riot ID. It does not move your League region or alter matchmaking. Account transfers are a separate process.
What changes—and what stays the same
| Changes | Does not change |
|---|---|
| Public display name in Riot games | Login username, password, or email |
| The full ID friends use to search for you | Rank, MMR, match history, Honor, mastery, skins, or currency |
| How your existing friends see you | Your place on their friends lists |
Riot says you remain on existing friends lists under the new display name. Tell regular teammates before the switch so they recognize you. New contacts will need the updated Game Name and tagline; see our League friends-list guide for the current search format.
Why your League name change is rejected or not showing
“This Riot ID is already in use”
Try a different tagline before abandoning the Game Name. The name before # can be shared, but the complete combination cannot. The same error may appear when you try to claim a reserved regional tag, so replace the tag with an eligible 3–5 character choice.
The save control is unavailable
You may still be inside the 90-day cooldown. Confirm the account you signed into and the date of its last Riot ID change. There is no current RP or Blue Essence purchase that removes the wait.
The account page accepts the change, but League shows the old name
- Confirm the new ID appears at account.riotgames.com.
- Exit League and the Riot Client completely, then reopen them.
- Sign out and back in if the profile remains stale.
- Allow a short period for cached social or third-party profile data to refresh.
You cannot access the correct account
Do not create a new account just to recover the display name. Use Riot's official recovery flow or Player Support. Our League account recovery guide explains the difference between recovering a private login username and changing a public Riot ID.
Riot documents one possible exception to the 90-day wait: if a recently changed Riot ID is causing harassment or other negative effects, submit a Player Support ticket and explain the situation. Approval is not automatic.
League name-change FAQ
Is a League name change free?
Yes. The current Riot ID change is free once every 90 days. The old paid Summoner Name system is obsolete.
Can I change only my tagline?
Yes, but saving a tagline-only change still uses the Riot ID change and starts the 90-day cooldown.
Can two League players have the same name?
They can share the same Game Name when their taglines differ. The full Game Name#tagline combination must be unique.
Can I change the username I use to sign in?
Normally no. Riot treats the globally unique login username as permanent and private. Player Support may review extraordinary cases, but a Riot ID change will not alter it.
Will changing my name remove friends or reset my account?
No. Your account data and friends remain in place. Only the public identity changes.
