How to Change Language in League of Legends

Which language setting changes what?

Riot's launcher and League's localized game package are separate. Use this table before changing anything:

Language also does not change your server, matchmaking region, ping, or Riot ID. If you meant to update the name other players see, use the separate guide to change your League display name.

How to change the League language on Windows

1. Finish or leave any active game, then close the League client. Keep Riot Client open, or launch it again from its normal shortcut.
2. Sign in to Riot Client. You can normally change the setting while signed in; the old advice that you must remain signed out is no longer the standard path.
3. Select your profile icon in the top-right corner, then choose Settings.
4. Select League of Legends in the game list.
5. Open the Game Text Language menu and choose your language.
6. Allow the update to finish. The client may download new text and audio files. Do not close it during that download.
7. Restart League if it does not reopen automatically. Check the Play screen and Practice Tool before joining a live match.

If you only want to change the shared launcher, go back to Riot Client settings and choose the launcher or Riot Client language option instead. Riot occasionally adjusts the wording and placement of this control, but it remains separate from League's game-specific option.

How to change the League language on macOS

The supported macOS procedure is the same. Quit the active League client, open Riot Client from Applications, sign in, and choose Profile icon > Settings > League of Legends > Game Text Language. Select a language, wait for the localization download, and reopen League.

You do not need to change the Mac's system language, edit the application package, use Terminal commands, or reinstall into a different region. If you are setting up a clean copy first, follow the current League client installation guide, then change the language from Riot Client.

Can League text and voices use different languages?

Not through a supported League setting. Despite the label Game Text Language, the selected localization package normally covers League client text, core in-game text, and the matching champion announcer and voice-over files. Riot does not provide a second supported menu for English text with Japanese voices, or any other mixed-language combination.

If the menus change but the voices do not, the safest response is to close League, let Riot Client finish all downloads, and launch again. A partial download or a still-running game client is more likely than a separate voice setting. Avoid third-party voice packs and modified game files.

Does your region limit the language?

Riot introduced global language selection so players can use their preferred core game language regardless of where they live. That means you should not need to transfer regions merely to change League's language. However, Riot notes that publishing content created for a specific region—such as news panels, promotions, or local notices—may still appear in that region's language.

Changing language does not move your account or alter the server you connect to. The distinction matters when comparing League regions and servers: localization is a display and audio choice, while region controls the service environment and latency.

The current dropdown in your Riot Client is the final authority because Riot can add languages or adjust distribution by publishing environment. As of this verification, Riot's official League localization index includes:

How to restore the default League language

1. Close the League client and return to Riot Client.
2. Open Profile icon > Settings > League of Legends.
3. Set Game Text Language back to the language you used before.
4. Wait for Riot Client to download or verify that language package.
5. Restart League and check both menu text and champion voices.

The official setting should normally survive routine client updates. If an update resets it, repeat these steps. Re-selecting the supported dropdown is safer than trying to make a configuration file read-only.

Safe fixes when the language will not change

League language FAQ

Can you change League's language while signed in?

Yes. The current supported game-language menu is available from Riot Client settings while you are signed in. Close the separate League client first so its files are not in use. If your client does not show the menu, signing out and relaunching is a reasonable troubleshooting step, not a normal requirement.

Does changing language require another download?

Usually. Riot Client may need to fetch localized text and voice files, and the amount varies by the languages already installed and the current patch. Let the progress indicator finish before launching League.

Can you use English text with Japanese voices?

League has no supported voice-only selector. The official setting installs a matching localization package. Mixed-language instructions based on shortcuts, modified files, or third-party packs are unsupported and can break after patches.

Will changing language affect your region or ping?

No. It changes presentation, not account routing or matchmaking. Region-specific news may stay localized for that server even when the core game uses another language.

What should you do if a League update changes the language back?

Return to Riot Client's League settings, select the preferred language again, and let the localization files update. If it happens repeatedly on a fully updated client, use the repair option or contact Riot Support rather than editing protected files.
