To create a custom game in CS2, form a lobby, choose Practice, Private Matchmaking or a subscribed Workshop map, select the map and mode, then invite friends before launching. Use Practice for local drills, Private Matchmaking for a private online match, and a dedicated server only when you need persistent hosting or advanced administration.
Last verified: August 27, 2026. Valve can move menu labels. Console commands below are intended for a local or privately administered server, not official matchmaking.
| Method | Best for | Internet required | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Practice | Grenades, recoil, bots and solo drills | Not for the local match itself | Host-controlled and not a full matchmaking service |
| Private Matchmaking | Ten-player private games with friends | Yes | Lobby and regional server availability apply |
| Workshop map | Aim trainers, custom arenas and community modes | Needed to download | Quality and compatibility depend on the creator |
| Dedicated server | Persistent community hosting and admin control | Usually | More setup, maintenance and security responsibility |

To use console commands, open Settings → Game, enable the developer console, and bind or use the console key shown in your controls. Commands affect the server you administer; they do not override official matchmaking rules.
A private matchmaking code is not a server password and should not be posted publicly unless you want strangers to join. If the option is unavailable, restart Steam and CS2, confirm everyone is on the current build, and check Valve service status.
Check the creator, update date, dependencies and comments before subscribing. Do not download a replacement executable or configuration bundle from an unrelated file host. A legitimate Workshop map installs through Steam.

sv_cheats 1 | Allows protected practice commands on a server you control. |

Enter commands one at a time and keep a text copy of any practice preset you understand. Do not paste an unknown exec file from a random website.
bot_add_ct and bot_add_t add a bot to a side.bot_stop 1 freezes bots for setup practice.mp_limitteams 0 removes the team-size difference limit locally.mp_autoteambalance 0 stops local automatic balancing. For an aim-focused session, the CS2 aim-training maps guide recommends suitable Workshop scenarios. The crosshair-code guide helps keep the visual setup consistent, and the CS2 beginner guide covers the fundamentals to practice with friends.
No. Local practice, Workshop sessions and private games do not award Premier or Competitive rank progress.
No. Server-protected commands work only where you have administrative control.
Not for ordinary friend matches or practice. Dedicated hosting is for persistent community servers and requires separate administration.
Menu routes and commands were checked against the current Steam CS2 build on August 27, 2026. The guide is updated when Valve changes Private Matchmaking, Workshop integration or supported command behavior.
